Annotate and mark up

Text markup

Annotate mode marks up a page without touching its underlying content. Highlight, underline, and strikeout snap to the words they cover, following the glyphs line by line rather than drawing a loose box, so a highlight over wrapped text tracks each line exactly.

Shapes and lines

Drag out a rectangle or an ellipse to frame part of a page, or draw a line or an arrow to point at something — the arrow's head follows the direction you drag. Pick the stroke colour and, for the pen, its width before you draw.

Comments, text, and callouts

Drop a comment pin anywhere to attach a note, add a text box to type directly onto the page, or use a callout to run a leader arrow from a text label to the spot it describes.

Freehand ink

The drawing tool captures freehand ink from a finger, Apple Pencil, or a trackpad, for marking up a diagram or signing off in your own handwriting. With Apple Pencil the stroke responds to pressure — press harder for a heavier line — and the same tool works with a finger on iPhone and iPad and with a mouse or trackpad on Mac.

Summarizing your marks

To pull every mark into one place, choose Annotation Summary from the Share menu: it produces a Markdown list of your annotations grouped by page, with the highlighted or struck-through text and any note included. See Export and share.
